Beginning of Lasting Changes from the Pandemic
The current pandemic has triggered a global change in human habits. A bunch of these will last. Some changes will keep morphing till they settle into something new. Let us look at some of these:
Individualism is an underlying factor for a lot of these changes. We love our freedom. Freedom gives us flexibility.
The passage to these changes will be bumpy. The classic example is remote work. Some employers are going all in. Some won't allow it. And then there are always those who will take the middle ground.
Any change that has less reliance on external factors will speed up. For instance, we can move from a higher-cost large metro to another lower-cost large metro. But our options dwindle if we want to live in a village environment. Unreliable internet and phone connectivity. Lack of good public schools. Minimal healthcare options. These bottlenecks prevent our move. But if we want to spend more time outdoors, that will happen. There is no dependence on anyone else.
The media will be full of both-sided debates about these changes for a long time to come. Very much like the city versus suburb debate that never ends. There is no right or wrong side. It is about what makes sense for us at that time.
Balance or semi-permanence will become visible after a while. That will be the new normal.
Change is good. Change is opportunity. Great new startups can capture these opportunities.
