Finding Your Simple and Easy
Each one of us should find our simple and easy. For the sake of simplicity, let us call this "it".
Let me know once you find "it". I wake up daily to find someone who has found their "it". "It" that converts to great startups. Startups that solve meaningful problems. Startups that become impactful companies.
- "It" should be real simple to understand. Even for someone who is not from that domain. Our parents and grandparents should get it. That is how simple it should be to explain. As a founder, you might be pursuing a difficult and complex science problem for your startup. But you should lay it out in a simple sentence for your parents and grandparents. This takes effort and iteration. And quite helpful in the future. Everyone connected to your idea will use this simple description to broadcast. Use it to your advantage.
- "It" should go through basic experimentation. You should write down everything you want to achieve in life. And short-list a few to try. Quick trials give very rudimentary personal experience. You will know what you enjoy and what you don't. I tried golf. I liked it, but I like natural movements much more. Some of my family and friends have a golf addiction. For me, the cost and time to try golf was a small investment that didn't work out. Make tiny investments of time and effort, and in some cases, a little bit of money to try a few things. Experimentation done right is very lucrative in the long run.
- "It" is simple because it stands out among your long list. It should be real simple for you to pick. Because it gives you joy. Because you are willing to wake up super early to do it. Because you are okay to skip drinks with friends for it.
- "It" should have gone through a stress test. Don't pick and announce to the world. Do you get a weird satisfaction after going through pain and discomfort while doing "it"? If yes, you picked right. Think of special forces who go through a similar experience.
- "It" should be easy for you. And hard for everyone else. "It" might already be part of your lifestyle or routine. And you never took time to sit down and think about it.
- "It" should be easy for you because you have mentally broken it down into a few small steps. Clarity of future passage removes constant mental stress. It is very much possible that some of these steps fail. Or you need to make modifications. That is okay.
- "It" is easy for everyone, but you create a new method of doing it. The new method should be your way. This will make it hard for others to replicate. And create a moat for you. In a ton of startup cases, we are inventing a new method. And not a new thing. The method is the IP.
- "It" should be easy for you because of the pull. There should be something about it that keeps pulling you. In the corporate lingo, people call it vision.
Let me know once you find "it". I wake up daily to find someone who has found their "it". "It" that converts to great startups. Startups that solve meaningful problems. Startups that become impactful companies.
