Inculcating Experimentation in Life: Part 1
Experimentation leads to improvement. Some improvements yield large life-changing rewards. I experiment on a pretty regular basis. And I have observed many people who either do it or don't. Here are some thoughts from these experiences:
Experimentation is so vital that we should encourage it from childhood. Do you experiment?
- Improvement: Over some time, it leads to improvement. A better work-life. Better personal life. Better health. Betterment in finances.
- Naming: It goes by different names. Trial and error. Hacking. Maker culture. And more. Whatever floats your boat.
- Imperfection: Many times the results are not what you expect. And many times things don't work out. At times, the same thing works out but after a long gap. Either you tried a different method or gained maturity. Both are good.
- Unsettling: Not-so-perfect results have consequences. This causes some pain and disruption in life. It is unsettling. And not only for you but for others around you.
- Community: The section of society that experiments is small. Super small. It is easy to find similar people. Let everyone know you do it. Often, like-minded people will find you.
- Support: The support group is a little different from the community. These are folks who understand and like you. They will be with you no matter what. Please value them.
- Ridicule: Expect most people to think of you as stupid or weird. Don't get worked up. Some lack perspective. Some hate experimentation. Some do not understand the benefits. Some do not care because what you are experimenting with does not matter to them. Many more reasons. Ignore. And keep going.
- Rewards: Small improvements are good. Though now and then, a large reward happens. A major milestone in life. These rewards are a result of the effort you put in earlier on.
- Starting: Okay, this is all good. So what do I experiment with? Anything. Start. Now. And start small. Try making your favorite beverage using a different method today. Fine-tune it. Keep at it. Ask others in the same boat. You will get some confidence. Try something else using a different method. If there is something super important to you, try experimenting with that. Your work, health, money, or relationships.
