Observations from experiences on company building:
- Leverage: One way to figure out how to leverage is to think of your startup as a person. Individuals have leverage based on wealth, fame, or power. Your startup may be recently off the ground and not have any revenue. But you might have leverage in some simple yet powerful ways. For instance, you might be in a position to define the industry standard for the product that you are working on. There are many such angles that a deep-thinking founder can use. The good news is that money is not needed in most cases. Brains work fine. Use it.
- Different: It is possible to create different methods in usual things. For example, approach the same potential customer as your competitors. But go after a different type of decision-maker. Compare the methods of working for your startup to a human routine. Do simple things using a different method. This will create a serious gap between you and others over sustained periods.
- Retention: Getting good hires or customers or investors is hard. Keeping them is harder, and in most cases ignored. It needs constant work. Shortcuts do not work here. If you find it boring, then hire someone who loves doing it.
- Slicing: It is possible to slice every market segment in many unique ways. Use your vision to guide which way to pursue. Random slicing can be a huge distraction. Often, it results in hard work but leads you in the wrong direction.
