Observations from experiences on company building:
- Allegiance: Founders and managers expect allegiance even when they do not say so. They will stop short of making promises, but talk of possibilities. As an employee, do a simple check. Find out how they treated their team in the past. Talk to them. Their experience will yield better answers than words.
- Independence: Letting team members function with independence is good. Too much of it, not so much. Look for managers who are into you. The ones whom you can talk to. Discuss how you did something and see if they suggest a better way. You will end up with two common buckets. The first set of managers relies on reporting for achieving performance. The second set relies on coaching. You know whom to pick. As a bonus, if someone coaches you well, build a deep relationship with that manager. Careers are long and these select relationships can be a game-changer.
- Vision: You may be at entry-level or far removed from the top depending on where you are in your career. Understand the company's vision as soon as you can. Distill this to super simple actions. Now observe every colleague around you. And see if their daily actions help the company achieve its vision. If not, you are working with a company full of fluff. In such a scenario, at least try to make sure your job is meaningful. Else, look for a more aligned company.
- Process: Do not take processes for granted. Every company has some process that they do quite well. Understanding this process can be helpful in the future.
