Tethers bind us to a specific location for most of our life. Let us look at some of these:

- Work:
- Employer's location is the determining factor in where most employees live. Coronavirus has accelerated the long pent-up desire for distributed work. Some employers are establishing small offices in many cities. Others are letting employees live anywhere.
- Education
- K-12: Social interaction is a large and important factor in shaping up childhood. If a new model were to emerge, can we replicate this experience?
- College: Colleges lead to the creation of regional clusters. Local employers prefer local colleges. Startup activity mushrooms. Critical mass builds. And graduates end up staying within these clusters.
- Healthcare
- Most preventive and routine healthcare is still in-person. And health insurance precludes us from moving across geographical lines.
- Relationships
- Support systems give us comfort. Family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and community. The thought of moving out of this comfort zone is scary.
- Shopping
- Most of our everyday shopping is still done in physical stores. Be it for physical products or services.
- Pursuits
- What are the most common pursuits? Eating out, movies, and arts & culture. What if we adopt different pursuits as we move to areas that lack these?
- Connectivity
- High-speed internet and cellular connectivity is available only in large cities. Transportation is another big piece: local, domestic and international.
- Inertia
- Moving is a massive pain. Pack the entire home, changing address, and cutting services. And then going through the reverse ordeal.
What else do you think tethers us?
Imagine the possibilities if we removed some of these tethers. Or even loosened them a bit. That passage to freedom leads to gigantic opportunities.
