Observations from experiences on company building:
- Tactical: Tactical actions during company building are good. You will need a lot of these. They work great as long as they align with the vision. There is a thin line between tactical and haphazard. Over time, some of these tactical actions will repeat. These are good candidates for converting into a process. Why? Because it worked more than once.
- Unrelated: One way to get execution ideas is to observe completely unrelated businesses. A typical startup founder may look at and up to similar startups. Or the ones that have faced the same problems. Or the startups that are a few stages ahead. One simple and smart way is to expand this horizon. Try to study a small local business. Or a village farmer. Or a cab driver. The more unrelated, the better. And a lesser chance of another competitor copying you. In essence, push your brain to go where your competitors won't.
- Thankful: It is normal to see ambitious people chase their vision with single-mindedness. In almost every case, many others contribute to help get you to that goal. Not appreciating these people proves expensive. A nice way is to think of your journey like a long train ride. Stop at each station and say thank you. If possible, do something useful for these people. The payoff can be many times higher in the future.
- Talk: Whenever in doubt about a decision, talk it loud. To yourself. Do it again. A quiet place where no one is listening to you. And then think through it. It is an old trick that works quite often.
