Observations from experiences on company building:
- Fantasy: Sometimes founders hit big roadblocks leading to stagnation. Founders may feel they have exhausted all past learnings and possible advice. When this happens, fantasize in your mind. Use paper. Or whiteboard. Do any form of doodling. Lock yourself in a room for some time. This is similar in a crude way to the fantasy genre of movies. If no existing actor suits your thinking, create one!
- Stamina: A lot of founders end up selling early. And after many years, they get a surprise seeing how big their initial market has become. The ability to keep going is super boring. And underestimated. If you figure out your way of creating enough charm to keep you going, the result might be a sizable company.
- Retention: How do you continue working with the cream of the crop when it comes to talent? You need to change yourself. Personal change is almost always hard. What happens if you do not change? Even though you may succeed in attracting the best talent, they will start leaving. Quality talent needs an environment that supports their creativity and ambition. As a founder, you are responsible for creating this environment. After a point, it is very little about you, and more about the purpose you are going after.
- Primal: What to do when no forward passage seems visible? It may be a surprise to some, but primal instincts work quite well in company building. Many founders and top operators use this when all else fails. Try it!
