Observations from experiences on company building:
- Directional Change: Once in a while, founders need to make a major directional change. It is hard because it ends up causing severe pain for at least one set of people. Either the entire startup team or customers or partners. Two tried and tested ways work, but there is no winner. Either start implementing the directional change across the board. Or try a pilot that expands later. Doing this is the exact opposite of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". One thing that does help is being always on during this change. Almost akin to a special forces mission.
- Pull Forward: Smart founders leverage good times by working harder. They pull forward a future project or task and get going with it. In a crude way, think of it as a list of chores. Complete some chores during the week, and then the weekend is less loaded.
- Fancy Titles: Most founders regard these as low priority. For some team members, it might be the opposite. They might be comparing themselves with their classmates and friends. In "some" cases, they do work. Experiment first.
- 100% Vested: This is nothing but an engaged team across the board. And that includes every team member. There are many ways to achieve this. And from time to time, good leaders keep feeling the pulse to ensure this is happening.
