Observations from experiences on company building:
- Focused Execution:
- Most founders have often heard this saying about getting the best from the team members. Hire the best. Give them challenging problems to work on. And everything else gets taken care of. This might have been a great strategy in the good old days. Depending on each startup's environment, things may be quite different.
- Distractions abound nowadays. People have begun to realize that working for you is one part of their career journey. If they do not like the ride, they will get off soon and board the next growth train. Add to this the constant feelers sent by recruiters. And not to mention their friends to check out the next hot opportunity.
- Personal life also matters. Some people have serious hobbies. Or interests they want to devote time to. Almost like a pet project that runs in parallel to their career. Founders do not control this. They do not even know about it in most cases.
- Commitments are another piece of the puzzle. Some team members may have existing commitments. And anyone can get a surprise of a new commitment that pops up in their life.
- Motivation is another issue. Finding team members who are self-motivated is hard. And even the best need a little bit of feel=good factor to keep going.
- The good news is that there are solutions to all these. It does involve serious work. But that is what founders sign up for as they choose to build something amazing. I will write more about this in future notes.
