Observations from experiences on company building:
- Discovering Momentum:
- By the very nature of startups, founders have to experiment often. And often, they need to make changes. If your modus operandi is changing all the time, progress may not happen. Momentum stalls. It is vital to get a few things right. And then keep building on those. As a parallel, the same holds for investors. One cannot keep changing the investing strategy too often.
- There are a few key areas where constant change is detrimental to building the startup.
- Are you having to change team members or their roles often? Do you have a hard time attracting quality investors? Do personal commitments fail most of the time? Do you keep choosing the wrong target market for your startup's product or service?
- There is no universal answer to the above. Founders should recognize that these patterns are like habits. Try adopting more than one good habit in parallel. The result is often none succeeds. Also, momentum builds when small things done right add up. Trying to rush through a process, say, hiring will lead to an unstable team. And all said and done, this is a difficult and long journey. Most things done with a short-term mindset will not be repeatable.
- The intent is not to avoid change. It is to find what works. And not get caught up in experimentation. Discover this as soon as you can. And then put all energy in that direction to build momentum.
